Title: Reflections on themes from the M4D 2018 conference: indigenous knowledge, peripheralization, and inclusion
Abstract: Professor John Sören Pettersson, Karlstad University, was one of the organizer of this year’s M4D conference, the M4D 2018 held at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda. The M4D conference series is a forum for discussions on Mobile communication technologies for Development where both practitioners and academics make presentations. This year saw a criticism of fossilization of the M4D themes to certain application areas and neglecting others. Other papers saw in addition a need for more conceptual self-reflection to discuss philosophical and theoretical underpinnings better and not get stuck in application areas. Some papers highlighted how discussions around ICT support may in fact underscore peripheralization and work against inclusion. Prof. Pettersson will summarize the discussions from the conference and give his own reflections on a research community that tries to make practical difference for people in developing regions.
